A very heartfelt response to the Jonah Mowry video.

Whether Jonah’s video was real or fake, that doesn’t matter. The important thing is for people to realize that bullying is huge issue. Kids like Jonah need positive support. When will kids learn that words DO hurt?

Spread LOVE not HATE.

The Eponine X Factor: Who Will It Be?

Lea Salonga as Eponine     (Lea Salonga as Eponine)

On my way home from work today, I heard some interesting news about Tom Hooper’s upcoming musical film version of Les Miserables. Four lovely ladies are in the running for one of Broadway’s most coveted and iconic roles, Eponine: Lea Michele, Evan Rachel Wood, Scarlett Johansson and Taylor Swift. As someone who has seen Les Miserables many times (not to mention it’s my favorite musical), I just had to voice my opinion. The competition should DEFINITELY be between Lea Michele and Evan Rachel Wood, no question. I love Taylor Swift and Scarlett Johansson, but let’s be honest, besides the fact that they would bring a big audience to the film, neither of them fit the role. Let’s take a look at the contestants…

Taylor Swift is a great country singer. I’m not going to assume that she can’t act better than her performance in Valentine’s Day because who knows, maybe she is hiding a secret talent and just needs a chance to showcase her skills, but I don’t think her voice or look is suited for Eponine.

Scarlett Johansson is an incredible actress. If this movie was not going to be a musical, she would be a fine fit. Besides the speculation that she seems too sophisticated and mature to play a young, street girl, I think she could capture the essence of this complicated role. But it is going to be a musical. I’ve read some other articles and blogs about this topic, and it seems the consensus is that Scarlett can sing. Other than in the movie He’s Just Not That Into You, I had never heard her sing, so I took the time to look her up on YouTube. I’m sorry, maybe it’s just me, but I do not think the woman has anywhere near the vocal ability to play Eponine. Again, maybe she could surprise us, but I just don’t understand how she would be able to sing On My Own and bring tears to people’s eyes.

Lea Michele absolutely has the best vocal chops. With her videos all over YouTube, we already know she can sing the hell out of On My Own. She definitely looks the part, as she is not too over the top gorgeous (forgive me, Lea!) like the other candidates. She already has musical experience. She played Chava in Fiddler on the Roof, originated the role of Wendla in Spring Awakening and even played Young Cosette in a Broadway production of Les Mis as a child! I think the big question with Lea would be her acting ability. I think she could handle the role, as she has experience playing a bratty teenager and portraying unrequited love for Finn Hudson on Glee’s first season. The only thing is, are people going to be able to look past Rachel Berry and see Eponine? Coming from a Glee fanatic, I do think this is possible. Not to mention, I think she definitely wants and deserves the role the most.

In my opinion, Evan Rachel Wood is the only other worthy candidate who could give Lea some competition. Not only is she a very credible actress, but many people don’t know that she can seriously sing! I had no idea until I saw Across the Universe. I could absolutely see her pulling off On My Own. Evan would also bring a different audience to the film, as she is known for more indie, alternative style movies. She could potentially look the part, maybe if she dyed her hair a more dirty brown and smudged some dirt on her face. No matter how hard I try, I cannot visualize Eponine looking as white as snow with blonde hair.

This is my opinion. In no way do I mean to say that it is 100% right. It’s just what I think. Out of these choices, I truly hope the role goes to Lea or Evan. Anyone want to challenge me or share their opinion? :)
